ALLEGRO suitable for LUXURIOUS BUSINESS DINNER

The winner of the Czech Republic's first Michelin star, the Four Seasons' flagship was brought up to world-class speed by chef Vito Mollica, who has since passed on the mantle. The menu, an inspired Tuscan-meets-Czech list, features delights like veal fillet, pan-fried foie gras and truffles or monkfish saltimbocca. The wine list is just as great, and the terrace looks out on Prague Castle across the Vltava.

AROMI suitable for FANCY DATE

One of Prague's best Italian restaurants is located in quiet Vinohrady, mercifully off the tourist radar. Inside, the rough wood and brick interiors bely authoritative kitchen staff, offering fine presentation of everything from the six-seafood antipasti platter to veal on saffron risotto with thyme. There's also a list of excellent wines, fairly priced and drawn from all around the boot.

AMICI MIEI best for TIME OUT WITH FRIENDS

Amici Miei offers outstanding cuisine in a slightly overlit hall, discreetly curtained off from the street. Highlights include veal scallops, simple, comforting tagliata with parmesan and rocket, and unusually warm and attentive service, plus an excellent Italian wine list. The dark, old wood interiors and white linen service never suffocate, thanks to genial staff.

Transport Metro Staroměstská/tram 17, 18.
Telephone 224 816 688

CAFE LAMBORGHINI best for ITALIANS VISITING PRAGUE

Burning rubber in the race to be Prague's hottest café, Lamborghini is a clean, streamlined space with slate grey accents, where you'll be served with killer Italian coffee, imaginative salads with tropical fruit and gorgonzola, and the best pappardelle carbonara in town. Grind your own fresh parmesan as you take in the colourful cast of casual-cool patrons.

CICALA great for its LOW KEY, BUDGET TAKE AWAY

Still considered a substitute for home by the local Italian community, this hospitable, low-key cellar venue features the freshest weekly specials the owner can create or import, presented like works of art. An easily missed two-room restaurant on an otherwise rather unappealing street, Cicala is worth seeking out.

GIARDINO best for PARTY WITH KIDS

Giardino offers an excellent garden setting for its fine Italian food. Start with creamy, decadent mozzarella Burrata before moving on to risotto frutti di mare or salt-baked sea bass accompanied by a bottle of crisp pinot grigio, and you should be all set for a fine evening.

PIZZA NUOVA feeds you AFTER SHOPPING

This new property of the Czech chain Ambiente meets its usual standards for service, decor and food, which generally set the pace for such ventures. That pace isn't particularly pulse-quickening and certainly not risky, but it does produce dependable pizzas and pastas with quickish service at reasonable prices. The zesty house tomato sauce and cheeses have won stellar reviews, and the location's handy if you need to refuel after a morning's shopping on Dlouhá street.

RISTORANTE DA EMANUEL best for LUNCH WITH A FRIEND

Thanks to a focus on interesting dishes such as swordfish carpaccio and pappardelle al cinghiale (mildly spiced ground boar), this little neighbourhood pasta joint always requires reservations. Expatriate Italians commute across Prague to eat at the tiny tables in an atmosphere defined by doting servers and terrible seaport decor.

Area Prague
Transport Metro Dejvická/tram 2, 20, 25, 26.
